World Teachers' Day is on October 5, and Teacher's Day in India is September 5. The best thank-you notes tell a teacher something they rarely hear: what changed because of them.
What to include
A specific moment. A comment on an essay, a question they did not dismiss, the day they stayed late.
What it changed. A subject you came to love, confidence you did not have.
Where you are now. Even a small update means a lot.
Examples
You told me my essay on the village well was worth finishing. I am a writer now, and it started there. Thank you.
From a parent: my daughter now says she likes maths. I have not heard those words in years. Thank you for being patient with her.
Prompts to adapt
“Thank my old maths teacher. Say I used to hate the subject, that she was the first to make it make sense, and that I now teach it to my own children.”
“Thank my school principal for staying after hours to help me prepare for my exams. Say I never forgot it.”
“From a parent: thank my son's teacher for her patience and for noticing what he is good at when nobody else did.”
Messages from a whole class
If a class wants to thank a teacher together, gather one memory from each student and combine them into one prompt. Keep it to four or five memories so the story stays focused. Reviewing the script together before generating is a good activity in itself.
Who else to thank
Teachers are not the only ones who shape us. Coaches, tutors, mentors, a school librarian or a neighbor who taught you to read: anyone who changed how you saw something can get the same kind of message.
A three-sentence formula
If you are not sure how to start, this structure works almost every time:
What you remember. “I remember the day you read my essay aloud to the class.”
What it changed. “It was the first time I thought I could write.”
What you want them to know. “I am a journalist now, and I think of you every time I begin a story.”
Saying thank you in another language
Hindi: गुरुजी, आपका बहुत-बहुत धन्यवाद।
Spanish: Gracias, maestra, por creer en mí. (Thank you, teacher, for believing in me.)
Portuguese: Obrigado, professora, por tudo.
If your teacher's first language is not English, a narration in their language is a particularly thoughtful touch.
When to send it
On Teachers' Day, when it is expected and welcome.
At the end of a term or after exam results.
Years later. Teachers rarely hear what became of their students, and a message after ten years can mean more than any card at the time.
A story greeting
The New Story screen in ShareGreet has a Teacher's Day idea chip to start from. Describe what your teacher did, pick a language and style, and review the script before it is generated.
