Cut-Out Flipbook Videos: Sketch, Cartoon, Colour Sketch and Flat Vector
Most flipbook looks draw the whole picture. The cut-out looks do something different: they find the person (or the character, or the toy) in each frame, lift them out, and draw only them on a blank page. The background is gone, and the book feels like a hand-drawn animation.
The four looks
- Sketch cut-out: a clean ink drawing. You choose the colour of the outline: black, blue, red, brown, green or purple.
- Cartoon cut-out: bold outlines and flat, warm colour, like a cartoon cel.
- Colour sketch cut-out: soft, rich colour with fine ink lines and a clean face.
- Flat vector cut-out: one smooth skin tone, flat colour shapes and thin clean lines, like a modern vector illustration.
What works best
- One person, a pair or a small group, with the whole body or the top half in view.
- A calm background. Busy backgrounds make it harder to find the person.
- Good light. Very dark or very bright clips lose detail.
- Cartoons, toys and animals work well too.
What to know
- For a close-up of a face, the book shows the face alone, cut at the edges of the page.
- In 4K these looks use up to 30 seconds of your video, and cost twice as much as the other looks, because each page is drawn first. In HD they take up to 60 seconds and are free.
